Canadian Sex Research Forum 2022 Annual Conference Report
The 2022 Canadian Sex Research Forum (CSRF) conference was held October 13-15 in Waterloo, Ontario. This annual conference brings together researchers, policy makers, students, educators, and community organizations in the area of sex research and practice across Canada to share knowledge and network. There were about 100 attendees at this year’s conference who attended various events such as plenary sessions, presentations, student-faculty networking.
Presentations at the conference included poster presentations, data blitz (5 minutes), and oral presentations (10 minutes). Each presentation fit within a broader theme of a) sexual well-being, education, and health services; b) sexual satisfaction and body image; c) good and bad outcomes; d) sex and technology; e) gender identity and sexual orientation; among others. As part of GB2G knowledge dissemination activities, Abdul Cadri – on behalf of Dr. Dryden and the research team – gave an oral presentation under the theme, “understanding sexual health”. The presentation, which was reviewed and approved by Dr. Dryden, described the background and rationale for #GB2G research project, and reported preliminary findings from AIM 1. The presentation recounted challenges experienced by the research team during the research process, as well as the experiences of anti-Black homophobia reported by participants. The presentation ended with recommendations and calls to action to correct the misinformation and reconcile harms resulting from Canadian Blood Services’ ongoing history of anti-Black homophobic/transphobic blood donation policies. There were about 70 people present during our presentation, and most attendees were shocked by the anti-Black homophobic/transphobic policies used by CBS. Due to limited time, we had one comment from the audience, and the person called for a collective action from all attendees to address the anti-Black homophobic/transphobic policies existing in CBS system. Our presentation was awarded First Place for the 2022 BIPOC Research Award, which includes a registration fee waiver for 2023 CSRF conference, to be held in Montreal, QC. |
